Don't be surprised if you see thousands of softball players around Roanoke this week.
The city of Salem is hosting the American Softball Association's Fast Pitch Softball tournament. It's the biggest girls' tournament in the country.
About 3,000 softball players are in town and they're not alone. Parents, family, spectators and coaches are also here helping to boost the local economy.
WDBJ 7 checked in with the Roanoke Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau to see what the tournament means for our area.
They said it's one of the biggest weeks of the year.
"They will be staying here a minimum of five nights for each team,” said Roanoke Valley Convention and Visitors Bureau president Landon Howard. “It's a huge economic impact as they will be eating out most of their meals, they will be checking out all the things we have to offer from museums to attractions, entertainment facilities, water parks, you name it."
More than 130 teams made the trip from 32 different states.
The Visitors Bureau said about 9,000 hotel rooms will be used this week.
Tournament games will be played in Botetourt, Salem and Roanoke County.
