MARION, Va. (AP) -

Two years after making its way to Marion in southwest Virginia, a piece of history from the 2011 terrorist attacks will be dedicated as a permanent memorial.

The 4,000-pound piece of steel salvaged from the World Trade Center in the days and months after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks will be installed in a permanent memorial outside the Marion Volunteer Fire Department on Sept. 11.

The Bristol Herald Courier reports (http://bit.ly/166hZ7g ) that volunteer firefighters from the area traveled to New York City two years ago to get the piece of steel. Since then, it has traveled to school groups and been part of memorial ceremonies in town.

Now it will have a permanent home alongside markers commemorating the attack and the lives of fallen local firefighters.
