The NAACP celebrates its 38th Annual Freedom Fund Banquet

The event was held at the Inn at Virginia Tech.

BLACKSBURG, Va. -

On Saturday, September 28th, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) held its annual banquet at the Inn at Virginia Tech.

The theme for the banquet is "Healthcare Services in Our Community".

WDBJ7's Orlando Salinas emceed the event.

In past years, the banquet has attracted more than 400 people.

Organizer Debra Travis says this is a great opportunity for folks to show support for NAACP and learn more about the organization. "We give persons in the community the opportunity to join and do community work. Maybe an education, economics, political action, or even membership," explained Travis.

President of the Jefferson College of Health Sciences, Dr. Nathaniel Bishop, was the guest speaker.

Bishop talked about his experiences as the first African American of the Christiansburg Police Department back in 1975.
