RICHMOND, Va. -

Virginia government has ended the latest fiscal year with its biggest surplus in eight years.

Governor Bob McDonnell says tax collections were better than expected as the state emerges from the recession.

That helped create a surplus of $585 million.

It's the fourth time in a row the governor has finished the financial year with extra money in the budget.

Gov. McDonnell says it proves the economy is getting better.
