WDBJ7 Hometown Garden Blog: Garden invaders

WDBJ7 Hometown Garden Squash Invaders

It may be too late in the season to even be worried about this, but the garden has been invaded!

About a month or so ago, I noticed little white bugs crawling around my zucchini plants. They looked like white stink bugs, so I thought they were harmless and left them alone. Big mistake!

Within another week, the zucchini plants looked like they were drying out. I water more frequently, but no changes. Finally, I dragged a few people from the station outside for their opinions. Turns out, the garden is infested with squash bugs!

A colleague gave me a bottle of Sevin Dust to try. I followed the directions and squished all the eggs I could find and it seemed to work- until the rain came back.

The zucchinis may be too far gone to save, but I’m worried that the bugs will spread throughout the rest of the garden.

As always, I’d love to hear from you. Send me an email at gfuqua@wdbj7.com and follow me on Twitter @Gena_Fuqua. The garden also has a page on Facebook, so be sure to “like” the garden page!
