An update now on the landfill fire in Wythe County on Horse Heaven Mountain near Speedwell. The National Forest Service expects that fire to grow considerably, before firefighters can get it under control.

SPEEDWELL, Va. -

The brush fire burning near Speedwell in Wythe County had grown to about 500 acres by Friday morning.  Fire crews reported about 15% containment.

The fire was discovered Tuesday night on National Forest land near Horse Heaven Mountain.  More than 60 firefighters have been working to contain it.  No structures are threatened, according to a spokesman for the U. S. Forest Service.

A community meeting is planned for Friday night.  Forest Service officials will present updated information and take questions from the public.  The meeting is 6:00 Friday night at Speedwell Elementary.

Because of a shift in the wind, smoke from the fire could be detected in the Roanoke Valley Friday morning.
