WATERBURY, Conn. (WTIC) -

A Waterbury man armed with a parrot was charged with assaulting a police officer and other offenses after hurling the white bird at a pursuing officer.

Police had been called to Orange and Walnut streets at about 10 p.m. Tuesday on a report of a fight. When they arrived, they spotted Luis Santana, 32, and the bird and began chasing him.

Police said Santana turned and threw the bird at the officer.

When Officer Gary Kichar raised his hand to shield himself from the avian projectile, the bird chomped down on his finger, police said.

Kichar was treated at the scene.

Police caught Santana, who tried to hide in the bathroom of a building in which he did not live.

Deputy Chief Christopher Corbett said police do not know where Santana obtained the parrot, but are caring for it at the city's animal shelter.

Santana, who lives in a local homeless shelter, was charged with assault on a police officer, interfering with an officer, disorderly conduct and cruelty to animals for the incident with the parrot. He was also charged with second-degree burglary for running into the building.
