Crews at Smith Mountain Lake set up fireworks, for a show that will illuminate the night sky.
"It's the largest show on the lake. Even though there has been shows for the last three days, this is the biggest and the best and we saved it until last,” said Rick McDonald, who works for Saunders Volunteer Fire Department.
More than 3700 shells for and at least for 15 minutes will blast off into the night sky giving spectators a larger than life display that can be seen miles away.
"We will probably see between the lake and parking lot here over 10,000 people here tonight to see these fireworks,” said McDonald.
People will not only see a great show but they are helping the fire department.
"We get some support from the county, but the majority of our purchases and everything are done by us, said Fireworks Committee Chair, John Honaker.
Though tonight will be full of fun, safety is also a key priority.
“Through the years we've developed a no wake zone anywhere in the area of the fireworks. It will be patrolled by the coast guard and by volunteers out on the lake,” said McDonald.
Spectators say they can't wait for tonight's display.
I love fireworks. I love all the colors and stuff, how long they last, it’s just vibrant, said spectator Michele Irby.
The view is great. The water color is perfect tonight. The sun is shining; we're going to have a good night, I look forward to it, said performer Sean Deel.
