Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer walks off the field Aug. 31 after the Hokies lost to Alabama, 35-10, to open the season.

BLACKSBURG, Va. -

Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer says Logan Thomas needs better support.

The Hokies' quarterback completed just 5 of 26 passes for 59 yards with an interception in Virginia Tech's 35-10 loss to top-ranked Alabama.

Beamer says the players around Thomas gave him little help. The coach has declined to say how many dropped passes the coaches counted, but says there were too many and that catching the ball will be an emphasis in practice this week.

Virginia Tech opens its home season against FCS-level Western Carolina on Saturday.

Thomas talked all preseason of holding his receivers more accountable, but says he tried to be more supportive and encouraging during the game

Starters Demetri Knowles and D.J. Coles were the receivers primarily responsible for the drops.
