BLACKSBURG, Va. -

Line coach Jeff Grimes promised an open competition up front and so far has delivered on that.

One of the leading candidates to protect Logan Thomas's blind side at left tackle is Jonathan McLaughlin, who is bidding to become the first true freshman to start on the line in the Beamer era.  "It's been a dream of mine since I was little," said McLaughlin. "Starting as a true Freshman would be great. Now I definitely need to keep working until I get there.

McLaughlin, who played at Fork Union Military Academy, has adjusted to a pretty steep learning curve.

He's even made an impression on his teammates, in fact he's on the op of the depth chart right now for the Hokies. "John is a great player," said Senior Offensive Lineman, Andrew Miller. "He has a natural ability to play football. I know he's been working hard to play this summer and if it comes to it, I think he'd be a good Left Tackle."
