FFE Flashback: Covington Cougars In 1984

This year a total of 192 teams in 6 Classifications made the post season. But back in 1984, the show's first year, only 48 teams in three classifications made the playoffs.  It was two years before the divisional playoff system was introduced.

The Covington Cougars were one of those 48, and John Woodzell's team played for all of the single A marbles against Central Lunenburg.

The Cougars entered the state title game on a roll, having outscored their first three playoff opponents by a combined score of 91 to 13, averaging more than 30 points a game.  But they didn't have it quite as easy against Central Lunenburg, the top ranked single A team in the state.

Bryant Holloway got an early touchdown to get Covington on the board.

But one play was the difference maker.  Alex Kessinger hit Petey Hunter on the short pass and Hunter took it to the house for what turned out to be the game winning score as Covington won the school's first state title and the first in the history of Friday Football Extra.
