The Glenvar Highlanders opened their season in Highlander Heaven Friday night against a Galax team that featured stud running back Steven Peoples.
This one was an old-fashioned shootout at the half, with Galax up 21-14.
There were more fireworks early in the third quarter as Tyler Smith took advantage of some good field position following a turnover. He pushed the pile for the touchdown and a 21-all tie.
Smith added another scoring gallop a few minutes later from 24 yards out to make it 35-21 Highlanders.
But Galax kept plugging. Joseph Dixon took a handoff and was off to the races, sprinting 77 yards all the way down the left sideline. That brought the Maroon Tide back within a touchdown.
Galax evened things up when Charles Harris picked off the Levi Mullins pass and took it back the other way for six. It was 35 all early in the fourth quarter.
Mullins was anxious to make amends. He found Jeremy Martin, who shook a defender and rambled in on the 38-yard touchdown to give Glenvar the lead again.
Inside the final minute, Dixon made another big play. He rolled 53 yards on the touchdown with just 47 ticks left. Galax tried to go for two and the win but came up short. Glenvar survived a thriller, 42-41, over Galax.
