The Lancers hoped a home game would erase the memory of last week's offensive performance in which Cecil Phillips's team managed only 37 yards from scrimmage

AMHERST, Va. -

In Amherst this week the Lancers hoped a home game would erase the memory of last week's offensive performance in which Cecil Phillips's team managed only 37 yards from scrimmage.

The tough early season slate continued for the Lancers against George Washington before next week's trip to reigning 5A state champ Lake Taylor.

Amherst scored early in the first half but it was all G-W from there.

Akeem Smith slammed it in on a short run making it 7 to 7 and that was only the beginning for GW.

Then there was some razzle dazzle from the Eagles. Wells Byrnes to Kowante Cobbs to Malik Clements.  The trick play got GW down near the goal line. Byrnes ran the ball in for a touchdown on the next play.  Nick Anderson'sEagles were up 26 to 7 at half time.

The Lancers came out to play in the 3rd. D-A Christian made a 27 yard run to get Amherst within striking distance. But it wasn't enough. GW went onto win 40-22.
