Heritage blew out Jefferson Forest last season but blowouts are the exception and not the rule with the Pioneers and Cavaliers. Eight of the last 13 meetings between the two have been decided by 10 points or less.
The JF coaching staff were getting the troops ready this week to play a speedy Heritage team.
On the opening kick-off of the second half, David Aveson returned the kick down the left sideline deep into Pioneer territory, but the Jefferson Forest offense stalled out and the Cavs only got a field goal out of the drive.
Heritage responded with this 50 yard pitch and catch from Austin Fitzgerald to Tyquante Simms across the middle and the Pioneers were up 21 - 10.
Two plays after the ensuing kickoff the Pioneers pounced on a Cavalier fumble at the Jefferson Forest 12 yard line and Heritage was back in business looking to blow the lid of this one.
Fitzgerald then took advantage of the fumble AND a roughing the kicker penalty and punched it in from 5 yards out. Heritage extended the lead to 28-10 midway through the third.
The Pioneers hold off a late JF rally to win 38 to 27.
