The 100th VSGA Amateur got underway Tuesday at the Cascades Course at The Homestead. Blacksburg product Jake Mondy won last year's event and is looking to repeat.
In the first day of stroke play today, Mondy sits tied for 11th with a few holes to play. He had 2 bogeys and a birdie on the front 9 to put him at plus one-- just 2 strokes off the lead. Mondy currently attends Auburn University as a member of the Tigers' golf team. While the competition is stiff in this tournament, playing in the tough SEC, has gotten him battle tested for events like this.
"It's pretty cool because playing the SEC, we played a lot of tough tournaments this year, a lot of bad weather and it really tests you all-around game every single week,” Mondy said. “Week in and week out you're playing against the best players in the county so to come back here and play in a tournament like this, I think it really prepares you well. You're going to see a lot of variety this week. This course is a lot different than Bayville last year. It's a lot shorter. It kind of levels the playing field to be honest so this is really a wide open tournament. Anyone can win it. But yeah, you gotta keep it in play here. You gotta have a good short game. You've gotta be putting well. So it's a good test of your all-around game."
