Only a handful of current coaches have been a part of the WDBJ7’s Friday Football Extra since the show began 30 years ago.

That list includes Blacksburg's Dave Crist, Floyd County's Winfred Beale, and William Byrd's Jeff Highfill.

Each one is approaching the 40-year mark at their current schools.

But as we embark on a new season, there are some coaching changes to talk about.

A total of nine area schools have new head men. Gary Burdette takes over at Alleghany. That's because Jack Baker bolted for Rustburg in the offseason.

Among the other changes, Jeff Robinson takes over at Chilhowie for the legendary Larry Russell, and Marshall Schmitt succeeds Jeff Woody at Brookville after Woody left for Monticello a few months ago.

Also, Nick Anderson is the new head man at GW Danville after Bobby Martin left the Eagles for the a  job at William Fleming. Orion Martin is the new coach at Martinsville.
