Director of Athletics, Jim Weaver made the announcement this afternoon that Hughes is heading to Oklahoma to lead the Sooners baseball program and that Patrick Mason will be promoted to Head Coach.

Virginia Tech baseball head coach Pete Hughes is leaving the Hokies to become the head coach at Oklahoma.

Associate head coach Patrick Mason will be promoted to head coach. Virginia Tech has scheduled a news conference for 4:30 p.m. Thursday to announce both moves.

Oklahoma ended the Hokies’ season on June 2 in an NCAA Tournament Regional game in Blacksburg. Virginia Tech finished 2013 with a 40-22 record.

Hughes took over the Virginia Tech program following the 2006 season. At Oklahoma he is expected to replace Sunny Golloway, who was named the head coach recently at Auburn University.

Mason was promoted to Virginia Tech's associate head coach in the fall of 2012. Prior to coaching at Virginia Tech, he served as an assistant coach to Hughes at Boston College.
